Looking for the best seafood restaurants in South Padre Island is not as easy as you think. We have spent three winters in South Padre Island, the last being in 2024. My husband and I are big about fresh seafood and everybody that goes to South Padre Island seems to always get excited about the fresh seafood.

Well, I have a surprise for you - Most of the South Padre Island restaurants bring in their food from other places, even other countries. It wasn’t until our 2nd winter there, and after getting to know some of the locals, we found out where the best places were - the ones that actually went out and caught their own seafood.

We made a point to check out a lot of seafood restaurants on the island while we there. It was when we were standing outside of a very popular restaurant that did all you could eat seafood buffets, that we noticed a delivery truck drive up with a truckload of fish - and on the boxes, it stated from Russia in big bold black letters, big enough to see from a short distance. Yep, that’s right - Russia. This surprised us and this is when we started digging into which seafood restaurants actually served fresh caught seafood from the South Padre waters.

It used to be that restaurants and even the locals would buy their fish direct from the fishermen when they would come in, but according to the new TPW regulations, and from what I heard, buying fish direct from the boats is not allowed anymore. Maybe years ago, everything was fresh on the island, but not anymore with the exception of just a few restaurants. I may not hit them all in this article, and I know new restaurants are constantly going up on the island but what I can tell you is about the ones that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Our Picks for the Best Seafood Restaurants in South Padre Island (or near)

  1. Joes Oyster Bar: This restaurant is not actually on the island, instead it’s in Port Isabel which is the small town right before you cross the bridge to South Padre Island. They have been recognized by Trip Adviser year after year for their fresh seafood and excellent service. It’s not a fancy place, in fact you’ll be served your food on paper plates with plastic utensils. But - their fish is FRESH caught and delicious! They also offer a small seafood market, where you can purchase fresh caught fish as well as other popular grocery items. Alcohol is not served at Joe’s Oyster Bar.
  2. Los Tortugo’s Seafood Market: This is another one of our favorites located in Port Isabel not far from Joe’s Oyster Bar. They have their own boats and bring in fresh caught fish and shrimp. How often, I’m not sure, but - their food is fresh and absolutely delicious! You’re served on regular plates with silverware here and will find that they have a nice variety of fresh caught fish. You’ll also find a small seafood market in the adjoining room. Alcohol is not served at Los Tortugo’s.
  3. Dirty Als: Dirty Al’s is a laid back place, with a casual atmosphere. You’ll find Dirty Al’s on the island to your right (just down a short distance) after crossing the bridge. We enjoyed this restaurant and the food has always been very good - no complaints at all. It’s a busy place with an outdoor seating area where you can watch the boats come in and out of the marina. You’ll find lots of shrimp dishes and seafood plates as well as burgers and blooming onions. They also do serve alcohol here.
  4. Blackbeard’s Restaurant: Blackbeard’s is on the island on the main road. They serve a variety of food, including mahi mahi, fresh oysters, steaks, burgers and more, and they do serve alcohol here. You’ll also find seasonal food offerings here such as Atlantic Snow Crab Legs, Red Snapper, Atlantic Salmon and more. They have a nice patio area which is in the front part of the restaurant facing the main road.

Overall, our top two pics are Joe’s Oyster Bar and Los Tortugo’s. The reason we chose these two as our top restaurants is because the food has always been consistent as well as the service. Digging past the tourist spots to find the real thing is the whole approach behind how we manage eating well on the road full-time. Happy eating!
